Luger Proof/Acceptance Mark Identification Guide (1898-1945) This is one of a series of identification guides for small arms. German firearms are loaded with a variety of markings and stamps. Decoding these proof marks is very useful in determining the age and history of the gun. The crowns over the U and the G are German proofmarks. The crown over G is blackpowder, the crown over U is inspected. Don't even know if you are speaking of a pistol, rifle or shotgun. Much more information is needed, and pictures would be a BIG help.
This is a typical 16 gauge of the period between 1912 and 1939. Marks visible are crown-over-U (final proof) and eagle-crown-over-S (smoothbore) and –W (choked). The 16-in-a-circle indicates the nominal gauge of the shotgun and the 16/1 shows that the actual diameter of the bores was between.662” and.669”.
